Hurst Celebrates Summer
Our usual Summer events will soon be in full swing. The organisers and
helpers have all been working hard and all that is now needed is for
everyone in the village to come and enjoy themselves.
The weekend of 23rd and 24th June will be devoted to the annual
Hurst Horse Show and Country Fayre,
followed a week later by the Party in the Park
on Saturday, 30th June.
The Annual Horticultural & Cottage Garden Society Show
will be held on Saturday, 18th August.
Find more details about these events inside this newsletter.
HVS Annual General Meeting
At the Annual General Meeting on 20th April 2007, one of the important issues
under discussion was the environment of the village. This included the Veteran
Tree project which featured in our last Newsletter and the Living Churchyards
project at St Nicholas church, where ancient grassland surrounding the church is
being carefully managed to encourage the growth of meadow flowers.
Councillor Annette Drake spoke of urban developments in the village and
reminded the meeting of the reasons why the Hurst Village Society was first
formed in 1971. She read from the second Newsletter published in July 1972,
showing that the issues which faced the village then are still just as relevant
today. This makes fascinating reading and we have published extracts from
this early newsletter.
Congratulations
Councillor Annette Drake has been elected Mayor of Wokingham Borough
Council. We wish her well in her term of office.
