OPEN DAY FOR ENGLAND’S “OLDEST BOWLING GREEN”

Hurst Bowling Club invites everyone in the village to their second annual Open Day on Sunday 20 May from 2.00 pm, to have a go at playing bowls on the green which is thought to be the oldest in the country still in use.

John Ingall, the club secretary, says that the club will provide people with bowls, and just asks for everyone to come wearing flat shoes or trainers. “It will be an opportunity for people to come and see what bowls is all about in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.”

The Bowling Club was established in 1747 and the green, which is behind The Castle restaurant opposite the Church, has been in use ever since then. W.G. Grace played at Hurst as a member of the London Club – and was not amused to lose the game! For more information please contact John Ingall (01344 777988) or Harold Poole (0118 961 8583).
