TRAFFIC NEWS FROM HIGHWAYS MEETING

The problems of speeding traffic and illegal parking in Davis Street were discussed at the District Council's Highways sub-committee meeting on 24 April. It seems that a solution has been found to these problems, although it may not please all residents, several of whom attended the meeting.

After lengthy consultations with Davis Street residents and the Parish Council the speed limit will be 40 mph with clearer signage, and solid white lines at the edge of the road (with a broken line to denote a driveway). This will show drivers how narrow the road is, and may encourage them to reduce their speed. An option to have street lights or road narrowing with lit bollards was rejected by residents.

Informal parking has eroded the grass verges on both sides of Davis Street and is illegal. WDC's officers have told the committee that car owners can be prosecuted for parking on the verges. Some residents said they would agree to use a formal parking area, but the committee members questioned why the council should pay for private residents' parking, when most of them already had off-road space available. A final decision on this matter has not yet been agreed, so please give your comments to Councillor Annette Drake as soon as possible.

It's 30 mph through the village

The long-awaited 30 mph speed restriction for Wokingham Road - the A321 - through the middle of the village has been agreed and will be implemented as soon as the publication of Traffic Regulation Orders and residents' consultation has been completed, and funds allocated.

Annette Drake has asked the officers to extend the limit on the southern stretch from Orchard Road (the edge of the settlement) to beyond Terrapotta and the Great Barn. If you have views on this suggestion, please contact Annette. She will be discussing the boundary limit with the chairman and would like to represent your views.

On the northern (Twyford) side the 30 mph restriction will extend to Whistley Green. If views on this suggestion, please contact Annette. If she receives no comments she will take it that people agree with this.

The added bonus is a 30 mph speed restriction on Hinton Road, School Road and Hogmoor Lane. Efforts to reduce the speed still further to 20 mph on School Road will continue.

Please contact Annette Drake (934 xxxx) if you have comments or views on any planning or traffic issues in Hurst.
