H2K - the Hurst Millennium group -
is nearing the end of its active life,
our fund-raising activities are over
and we continue to fulfil our planned events in the village writes Geoff Adderley.
Jazz in the Park on 1 July was a brilliant start to the summer activities.
The James Alley Jazz Men and The Swamp Things proved to be very good,
and we had a fine evening to enjoy them and a successful evening.
The Over 60s trip to theatre and dinner at The Mill at Sonning
on 12 July was attended by 23 members of this group.
Their chairman David Bye said that from the moment they were picked up at the Village Hall,
until their return the whole evening was excellent.
The marquee erected on the village green for the Children's Party
on 22 July was for shade only as we had a beautiful day, writes Caroline Speer.
There were 120 children and 60 adults who enjoyed the exploits of children's entertainer Lee Summers,
and practised their circus skills on the unicycle.
Rupert Tuggey won the football competition,
and James Girdler won the engraved trophy for completing the obstacle course in the fastest time.
Everyone enjoyed a substantial tea, and many thought this should be an annual event.
Any volunteers?!
Many thanks to the marquee team, Terry Bovis for the electrics
and all who helped with the preparation beforehand and on the day.
I enjoyed myself and I hope that all the children did.
It was certainly a great way for families to celebrate the Millennium
and be part of the village of Hurst.
All of this could not have happened without the tireless fundraising
of the H2K committee for the past three years - thank you!
The Lads v Dads Cricket Match went ahead on 28 July
on a special wicket in the outfield due to the very wet pitch, writes Geoff Adderley.
It was a close call, but the Dads snatched the match by a whisker.
£78 was donated to the Macmillan Nurses in Wokingham,
and our thanks go to the Cricket Club for providing excellent beer.

We have finally erected the H2K village signs
at the entrances to the village.
These green and gold signs welcome people to the parish of St. Nicholas Hurst,
and feedback from villagers and others has been good.
The bronze map of Hurst
is nearing completion and will be mounted within the grounds of the Village Halls
as a long-lasting reminder of the activities and events that have happened in Hurst
during this Millennium year.
The last H2K event in 2000 will be the St. Nicholas Day celebrations
on Wednesday 6 December.
We hope that everyone in the village will join in the candlelit procession from the Village Halls
to the Church and then return to the large Village Hall after the service for hot minced pies and mulled wine.
The H2K Committee will be winding up during December and allocating the remaining funds for the benefit of the village.
This could be a Village Hall project because it is felt that the halls are a community facility
that most people in the village use at some time.
Food for thought...
For the past three years H2K has run a New Year's Eve Dinner and Dance
that has always been well supported and a great success.
By New Year's Eve this year H2K will have been disbanded,
and so will not be organising this special event.
It is not unrealistic to raise approximately £1,500 from this evening,
and if any group within the village would like to take the dinner dance
for their own organisation I feel certain that any H2K committee member or helper
would be very happy to pass on the lessons we have learnt over the years.
