SENIOR CITIZENS OPEN FORUM FOR THE NORTHERN PARISHES
Most of the January meeting was devoted to considering the report due to be presented
to the WBC Executive on the future of adult social care services.
The government has decided that it will no longer increase the
funding provided for social care services in line with the
increasing number of older people. Local authorities are required
to develop alternative services for managing the increasing
demand for social care. Current expenditure can be maintained
but growth has to be contained.
Later that day, the Executive decided that social care services should only be
provided for people with "critical" needs. People with "substantial" or "moderate"
needs would require alternative sources for their care. Prevention services would
aim to promote the health and general well being of people, to enable them to
continue living in their own homes and reduce their need for more intensive forms
of health care or a place in a care home.
The Council's response to the consultation should be available early in March and
then the effectiveness of the consultation can be assessed.
The subject of the meeting on Thursday, 26 April will be Addressing the
Challenge of Retirement given by Joanna Rowley of Retirement Solutions. If
you are over 55, you are welcome to join us. The meeting will start at 2 pm.
